Equal Pay Act of 1963
The Equal Pay Act was first proposed in 1945, but failed to pass because of the term "comparable work". Comparable work is "equal pay for different jobs in the same workplace. Pay was to be determined by comparing the worth and/or difficulty of the jobs." Meanwhile, "equal work" means ”jobs requiring equal skill, effort, and responsibility, and which are performed under similar working conditions." The Equal Pay Act failed to pass multiple times because of this. In 1963, though, the bill was reintroduced with "equal work" instead of "comparable work." The bill passed through the Senate and the House of Representatives, and was signed by John F. Kennedy on June tenth, 1963.
